correct or in correct

I'm applying to immigrate to Canada and I got a serial number. But overall, I'm still in the first phase of the official procedures.

Grammatically, it is fine.  The question is register.  'I got' is quite casual, while 'in the first phase of the official procedures' is rather stilted.
