I normally use "can not" but most of the places it written "cannot".

are both correct?

can not =cannot

"cannot" is the only correct form.
Unlike all the other modals, when "can" occurs with "not" it forms a single word.

must not, may not, should not, ..., cannot!

Isn't English maddening?Smile [:)]
