I asked him are you always taking the bus. He replied only when my wife did not use the car. Then he uttered that my wife gave me the car back when it was in trouble.

Are they correct?

He replied,  "Only when my wife IS USING the car."
Then he uttered, "My wife gave me the car back when it HAD TROUBLES."

That's not logical. If his wife isn't using the car, then presumably he is. That's when he would NOT be taking the bus.
