catch up with some old mates?

Yes, "old mates" is "old friends", as you say, and "catch up with" is "update someone that you haven't seen for a long time with your news"; here, probably by going out together to the pub, etc.

"Old mates" is informal; it isn't used by all social categories of speaker, and is more commonly heard from a male.
