Hello,

Can someone help me with this question?

"I had someone fix the computer because it didn't work."

Please change this into passive voice.

Thanks

 Hi,

Can someone help me with this question?

"I had someone fix the computer because it didn't work."

Please change this into passive voice.

You can't do this directly, ie you can't say 'Someone was had by me to fix . . . '

You could say 'Someone was asked to fix . . . ', but that sounds awkward.

Best wishes, Clive

Thanks, Clive

But is it possible to say:

"Someone was made by me to fix the computer..."

Sorry for being annoying. Because it is a practice, I need to write an answer.

Thanks again, JC

Hi,

Sorry for being annoying. Because it is a practice, I need to write an answer.

It's possible to say many things. But that sounds so awkward that, to me, it sounds stupid.

Also, consider this.

I had someone fix the computer - usually means that I asked them to. eg Please fix this computer.

I made someone fix the computer - sounds like I forced them to do it. eg Fix this computer or I'll shoot you.

Some teachers of English who are not native speakers need to understand that just because some things can be said doesn't mean that they are  said.  This is one of those cases where a possibiity just doesn't work.  It's a bad example for an exercise!  Please feel free to quote us!

What about making the embedded clause passive? I had the computer fixed.
