Dear teachers,

I have a question regarding the causative verb.

The supervisor had him stock shelves all day.

The supervisor had him stocking shelves all day.

I think the former one is correct, but the textbook says the latter one. Why?

Please advise.

Hi,

I have a question regarding the causative verb.

The supervisor had him stock shelves all day.

The supervisor had him stocking shelves all day.

I think the former one is correct, but the textbook says the latter one. Why?

Both sound fine to me. In his Practical English Usage, Section 286, Michael Swan says both are possible, but that the former is more often in AmE.

Best wishes, Clive
