For those who use chat rooms, what are the things that just make you nuts?
Perhpas beause our affiliated chat room is for people learning English, I'm more sensitive to how things are abbreviated (and how it must be hard for learners to understand) .
I think my #1 is when a person enters the room with "yo dawg wazzup???" Even without the dawg "yo wassup" is pretty bad. (And no, it's not only the Americans who do it!)
What about you?

Barbara, who answers in American English. My housekeeping skills attest to the truth of the second law of thermodynamics: Left to themselves, things get more and more random!

I hate "asl", when they ask me, I always try to ignore them or I directly say.."I don't understand you"

I agree with Pucca on 'asl', anyway I hate all the acronyms in general. I don't like also abbreviations like: y? r u there? and so on! I can only accept lol ![Wink [;)]](/emoticons/emotion-5.gif)
By the way, what's that 'dawg'? I can't find any meaning for it ![Thinking [8-)]](/emoticons/emotion-43.gif)

Hey there, good question... Well, I don't like the way "you" and "are" are abbreviated (you --> u, are --> r) and the personal pronoun "I" when it's not capitalized (I've --> i've), they look ugly, they look worse than the standard versions, and you are not going to save much time typing that way. It bothers me when people don't punctuate their sentences (Ex: my name is jenny if you want to chat just tell me hey Mike89 wassup), again bad style, looks ugly. What I use a lot are words like "lol, rotfl, rotflmao", those act like they are emoticons.

I don't use chat rooms. As a rule, if I see something that makes it difficult for me to understand a text, I don't read it. It's not meant for me. CB

Dawg is unfortunately used in real life too. I guess it's replaced "dude" and for that I am grateful, but somehow it just seems wrong for men in their forties in business suits greeting each other with "Hey dawg" and doing that closed fist, tap-knuckles thing. I guess I've become a curmudgeon. Can I change my name here to "Curmudgeon"?
My second-most-hated thing is "Hi!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!" Why is it necessary to use so many exclamation marks? (See, I'm a curmudgeon!)
Pucca, I don't like asl either, but not because it's chat slang. I just don't know why my age, sex or location should matter. I don't plan on dating any of these people, so can't we just talk like people?

I read an article yesterday that mentioned a racehorse called 'Pot8os' that won many major races in 1865...so it looks like people have been doing this for a long time!

I just hate too many exclamation marks too! If you want to emphasize something I guess 3 '!' are more than enough...Can I be Curmudgeon II ? ![Stick out tongue [:P]](/emoticons/emotion-4.gif)
