Hello,
I read an article on injury prevention in children and saw this sentence:
Youth ice hokey players are advised to avoid "checking" until they are at least aged 16.
What does "checking" mean in that sentence and why is in quotes??
Thakn you in advance

Hi Tibi,

I don't think the quotation marks are needed, but it is a hockey term-- short for 'body-checking', I believe-- and it means running into the opponent full speed, thus checking (stopping) him with your bodyweight. It is a major cause of injury in the sport.

'The question is,' said Humpty Dumpty, 'which is to be master-- that's all.'
