choice of adverb

Dear Teachers,

Which adverb would be best here, please?

"After the departure of the police, Mrs Rice (then / subsequently ?) thought she needn't be afraid any more."

Neither. You  have already said "After." I believe that if you add "then," it's redundant.

Subsequently means that something else occurred, not related to the police and their departure, but simply occurring afterwards, than changed something.
