I have to put these statements below in chronological order & figure out what the essential clues are.  I think the essential is the tenses, am I right???  Please help?????

These are the statements

a.  We're going to live in Cape Town

b.  After we've lived in Cape Town for a few years, we'll move back to Johannesburg.

c.  We live in Johannesburg.

d.  We lived in Durban for 5 years.

e.  We were going to move to Port Elizabeth in 1983 but my job there fell through

f.   By the time we move to Cape Town, we'll have spent 3 years in Johannesburg.

g.  We lived in Pretoria for a while before we moved to Durban.

Hi,

It's not just tenses. For example, consider words like 'before' and 'after', which are pretty clear clues.

Try this yourself, and post your answer, and we'll be happy to check it for you.

Best wishes, Clive

essential clues are tenses and words like before and after that describe how two events are relative to each other in time.  From oldest to most current, the order is g,d,e,c,a,f,b

Whoever wrote this test, I think he had a few too many. This is a crazy test!

Chronological means time line. After reading it 4 times, I am still confused because of the tenses, names of cities and town and unclear description.

If this is your answer:g, e, d, b, f, a, c, it would look like this:

   g.  We lived in Pretoria for a while before we moved to Durban.

   e.  We were going to move to Port Elizabethin 1983 but my job there fell through

d  We lived in Durban for 5 years.

b After we've lived in Cape Townfor a few years, we'll move back to Johannesburg.

f.   By the time we move to Cape Town, we'll have spent 3 years in Johannesburg.

a.  We're going to live in Cape Town
  c.  We live in
Johannesburg.

It makes no sense to me. Maybe I need a drink to help me see better…

Hi,

Indeed, I agree that it's an unclear and very odd test.
Does chronological order mean, for example,  the order in which the statements were said, or the order in which 'we' stayed in these places and did these things?

Statement e, for example, could be said at any time.

Statement g, for example, could be said before or after statement d.

Or I could just make a chronological list of places, eg
Pretoria  Durban  Johannesburg  Capetown  Johannesburg

hi, chronological order, meaning, the order in which 'we' stayed in these places.

Hi,
Pretoria  Durban.  Johannesburg. And in the future, Capetown and then Johannesburg.

But not at Port Elizabeth.
