What’s funny is close has two pronunciations and two meanings. I can be close to you and I can close the door. “I’m going to close the door if you get any closer.” In close the door the “s” has a “z” sound and in I am close to you the “s” has a typical “s” sound as in snake.

My dictionary & in fact most lexicons tell me it may be pronounced as /clZ/ or /clðZ/. I mostly utter the easy or ‘lazy’ 1st version.

I pronounce "clothes" exactly as it is written. Sounds like "clo w ths". Whenever I hear it mispronounced "close" it gives the impression that the speaker is lazy, uneducated, or perhaps there are English dialects where it is correct (but none that I know of). Anyway, I recommend that you pronounce it as written.

Hi,
Close - with "s" sound, when it's an adjective: She was close to me.
Close - with "z" sound, when it's a verb: Close the door, please.

If you don't have a sense of humor already, it's about time you buy one.

Hey, you're right about that! further down at the answers link, right? didn't see that .. in fact when I say it to myself now that's the way I say it - should trust my ear better ... doesn't sound right to me with a 'z' for the adjective. tnks Smile [:)]

I have never heard the s in close pronounced as a z. Also, I have never heard anyone pronounce the th in clothes.

I speak American English. Well, actually, a version of Philadelphia area English.
