I fail to see how even the most self-righteous court could 'rule' on biological fact.  Botanically, a coconut is a simple dry nut known as a fibrous drupe (www.agroforestry.net).  Nuts are a kind of fruit. The part we eat (the endosperm) is within the seed of the nut/fruit.

I expect it has something to do with taxes or subsidies, or some such. I seem to recall, although it may be an urban legend, that the tomato (technically a fruit) was deemed to be a vegetable by Congress.

Oh - I found it: http://recipes.howstuffworks.com/framed.htm?parent=question143.htm&url=http://www.vegparadise.com/highestperch8.html

And it was in the 1800s, not some idiocy of the recent administrations.

According to the EU a carrot is a fruit, not a vegetable.

((()))I fail to see how even the most self-righteous court could 'rule' on biological fact.

let me start my saying "I don't want to start another controvesy by what I am about to say". But I was a little giggling inside when I saw the title"
Is coconut a fruit, nut or vegetable?".  Aside from the headlined controversy, this came to my head as I read this thread:
Can a man be a woman? and conversely a woman be a man? or can a man, against his biology, be a man and a woman alternatively as
he pleases? How
ironic that you mentioned biological fact. That was how ridiculous I felt with the ruling a month ago when the bunch of "self-rightious" black
ropes got together in San Francisco and ruled on the (same sex) marriage issue against the voters' wills.
