I wonder why people say" I have *a* cold." Why not say: I have cold. Please explain.

Articles are determiners that indicate if you are referring to a specific or general thing.
'I have a cold' works just like 'I have a dream', 'I have a head', 'I heave an idea'.

Maybe because there are thousands of differnt strands of colds, each giving you an immunity to it after catching it.
