What is the difference between "Thanks for coming" and "Thanks for coming by"?

Thanks

In a social chit-chat context, nothing.

More precisely - "Thank you for coming" implies you have been asked to come;  "Thank you for coming by" implies you visited/came on an impulse and without invitation.
