When do you place a comma after the salutation and when to you place a colon?

Hi,

Ther is no absolute rule about this. 

I always use a comma.

I seem to remember from typing class about 100 years ago that we use the comma in personal letters, the colon in business or more formal letters.  Things have changed since then, I'm sure, but I think I abide by that distinction to this day.
