Under what circumstances should a comma precede the word "where"?

Hi,

Under what circumstances should a comma precede the word "where"?

That's a rather general question. I suggest you try to write some different kinds of sentences with 'where', and then we can offer you comments.Smile [:)]

Best wishes, Clive

Hi...

Examples I'm not sure about:

I went to Glasgow University, where I read History.

He went to Glasgow, where he watched a football match.

He was sent to Glasgow, where he spent several days.

Thanks all...

Since Clive is offline, I'll venture a reply. I would probably use a comma in all of your examples because there is only one Glasgow University and Glasgow. There isn't necessarily agreement on all points of grammar and grammatical terminology also varies. I should think that all those who consider where clauses to be relative clauses have to use a comma as well. This is because a relative clause whose antecedent is a proper noun normally can't be a restrictive relative clause and thus requires a comma:

I took a trip to Glasgow, which I had never been to before.
