Would the sentence, "When an individual applies for a credit card, potential creditors obtain a credit report so that they can assess that person's ability to repay credit, nevertheless, creditors commonly extend credit to people who are not creditworthy." be correct? Can the word nevertheless substitute for a coordinating conjunction?

Credit cards offer several advantages, for example, you can purchase products and services without carrying a large amount of cash or a checkbook.

And is this sentence any different?
