I have a question. Would a sentence like the following:

"Credit cards offer several advantages, for example, you can purchase products and services without carrying a large amount of cash or a checkbook."

be considered a comma splice? There is no conjunction, but could the "for example," take its place?

I think I'd like to see a semi-colon between 'advantages' and 'for example'; both clauses are independent.  Also, I think I'd change the word order at the end-- 'without carrying a checkbook or a large amount of cash'.
