Is this comma necessary?

When my family visits, we go to the movies, eat at fancy restaurants, and stay up late at night.

It is most common in style books to include the comman before the conjunction 'and'.  You will find more style books in favor of it than the ones that leave it out.

It's called the oxford comma. It is optional. Go check it out online.
