Hi,
The commitee awarded the prize from a near record field of 181 candidates for their efforts to draw attention to mankind's impact on the climate and measures needed to address the problem of global warming. It warned that climate change--linked to droughts, floods and rising seas--could threaten living conditions across the world, prompt mass migrations and increase the risk of wars.
"We wish to put world climate on the agenda in connection with/related to peace," commitee chairman Ole Danbolt Mjoes said. Gore, 59, said he was deeply honored and would donate his share of the prize money to the Alliance for Climate Protection.
To begin with, what does "the committee" refer to? Is it the U.N. climate panel? No. It's the committee that is responsible for deciding who wins the various Nobel prizes.
And what does the line in bold mean? It means that there were 181 candidates for the Nobel peace prize. The figure of 181 was almost the record number. The committee chose one of these 181 candidates.
Second, are "in connection with" and "related to" interchangeable? Neither works very well here. Perhaps this is a translation from another language. You could say 'because it is related to peace'. The committee got some criticism for their choice of Al Gore, from people who said that working for climate improvment is not the same as working to bring peace to the world.
Best wishes, Clive
