Hi,

The word communications is a noun. When it preceds another noun, it takes part in a compound noun. Yes, it acts as an adjective if one likes to point out it modifies the other noun. As you have seen the answer from Grammar Geek, she used 'communications field', which is the same as 'the field of communications'. Adjectives cannot be positioned immediately after of.
