It has been wonderful to see so much community participation at these charity events.

...                                                                     participating at these charity activities.

Hi,

Do both of the above sound right and mean about the same to you? Thanks.

Hi,

I think "community participation" is a fixed expression (at least in the UK)  so I wouldn't split it. Have a look here, for instance.
As for events / activities, I understand "event" as something which is done once in a while, something exceptional or unusual and which spans a short period of time, while the word "activities" makes me think of something which is done on a regular basis, or which is done over a longer period.

So, I would not use the second sentence.

I hope I'm not misleading you. Wait for a native's confirmation. Smile
