Not sure this was implied in the question, but I think there are cases in which "direct" and "responsible" won't accept the comparative/superlative forms.
Examples:
"The student was expelled at a direct request of the headmaster." (meaning a request coming directly from him, with no "intermediaries")
"My youngest son is responsible for this broken window." (meaning he did it, period. There are no degrees of responsibility here).

Is that correct?
