It’s already chemas-microsoft-com:officeTongue Tied [:S]marttags" />5 o’clock now. Don’t you think it’s about time __________?

       A) we are going home                                     B) we go home

       C) we went home                                           D) we can go home

Which one will you choose to best complete the sentence and why?

I thought B or D would be the correct one, but I was told C is correct. I don't understand why C is correct. Someone, if you know why C is correct or not correct, tell me please!

Thank you in advance!

Yes, the anwser is C. "It's (high) time" takes a subjunctive/modal preterite please correct the name, someone!

"It's high time we went" (see Joe Cocker), "it's high time he were in bed", etc...

We can sometimes use Simple Past to refer to the present and this is called Unreal Past.........you know......for wishes.......
eg.  I wish I were rich!!!( but i'm not)..........to wish for something that we wanted to be different in the present but it's not. In this category belongs the " It is (high) time"  expression..................so remmember..........after " It's (high) time" always Simple Past
I hope I helped you with this mess!!!!

I agree that it's (c) but I'm not sure why. The past subjunctive is used to express something contrary to fact eg, 'suppose I were to offer you an increase...'.

Btw, 'were' is the preterite, but it's not a modal.

Hold your horses everyone! The past subjunctive is only visible with the form 'were' in the 1st and 3rd person singular to express non-fact.

In this case we are talking about the past form of 'go'.

I know the answer is (c), however, I don't know the reason why. The example is neither the past subjunctive or the second conditional, which are the only two forms that I know of where we use the past simple to refer to the present or the future.

Thank you all for what you have written here. I can understand it right now, but It is high time I went to bed. Thank you again.
