Hello Shab

That's nearly a correct version with the simple past tense. Maybe you could put it like this:

1. Well, she slipped on some rocks and I didn't have time to hold onto her, it was so sudden.

With "had", you could say e.g.

2. Well, I had just gone off to buy an ice cream when she fell over the edge, so I don't know why. Maybe she slipped on some rocks.

Hello Shab

Here are some exercises. I've left spaces for the verbs; the verb you should use in each case is in parentheses after the space.

You can choose which tense to use in each case. (There may be more than one correct answer.)

1. On the way home last night, I _____ (buy) some fish and chips.

2.  MrQ  ______ (come) to see me later today.

3. I tried to call him, but he ____ (be + not) at home.

4. I ___ (eat) all the plums. They were cold and sweet.

5. I _ (break) my finger playing cricket, so I can't type properly.
