I'm not trying to start a fight of ideologies here but I'm not agree with the above statement. Everything that came to existence has a beginning, and I believe C is regarded as the beginning of the modern programming techniques. All the high level languages that came to existence after C, drew some of their basis from C, or simply improved what was considered a limitation to C. I think every programmer has to learn a bit of C, at least to have an idea of what a structured programming language is, and later, shift to any OO language of his/her choice. After all, C is the high level language that was used to improve the UNIX operating system, wich is considered by many, one of the most secure and reliable OS. Nobody thought at that time a high level language could suppressed or be used to build an OS over Assembly language. I'm not urging you guys to learn it or to stick to it. I just think it does more good than harm to have a glance at it, especially in the early stage of our studies.

I agree with the majority here. 'C' is a good starting point. It is a well known fact that you can do "anything" in 'C'. If you plan to program on DBMS then it would be handy to pick up some SQL skills.

Santa, You couldn't be more right! I felt the same when I started using
PL/SQL. There are many similarities with C/C++, and my using PL/SQL
gave me a better understanding of some C/C++ concepts.

If you want to start a language, start with Visual basic 6, its easy and very helpful, and very easy to learn its syntax

I totally agree with you.Microsoft has been highly dependent on these basic languages.Although they have recently launched some other languages that offer more features and compatibility with wide range of operating systems, yet they havent been as successful as C and C++ .As far as security problems are concerned,it can be seen as a reliable product. However, it is more sophisticated and difficult for non-programmers unlike other languages which can be programmed even by non-technical people.
Further more i would like to mention that in view of the growing competition around Microsoft has been able to adapt to it well.It has been very quick in removing any flaws in their products time to time.Sun Microsytems which is by far seen as the strongest rival of Microsoft as far as software application development is concerned,is no far in dominating the software industry as soon as Microsoft does some lavish work.

I disagree with you! Why should they learn VB 6, when VB .NET Version 2005 or 2006 is already out?
