I think it's better to use "the protection of the environment" than to use "protection of the environment".  Why can "protection of the environment" be used?

Is it because "the" is omitted from "the protection of the environment" from the standpoint of style?

Or is it because "protection of --- " is used idiomatically?

Omitting 'the' makes 'protection' a more general and less specific reference.
