Hi all, I have some confusion about have got and got, mainly the second one.

I often hear people say, and actually I used to say this because I see this usage too often:

1)Hey man, I got three top-end identical computers in my home now, they are real cool like no others.

2)I got so much money which allows me to purchase any hardware I like.

3)You got no brain, seriously.

As I have said, I used to use "got" in this way, to treat it exactly as "have". But after some sort of meditation... I now think "have got" is more preferable and correct. It is just because "have got" is a present perfect tense and it undoubtedly indicates something happened before and still happening in this moment. However, "got" is a simple past tense, it indicates something happened previously and no longer exist currently. Therefore, my conclusion is, we should not apply "got" as "have" but "had" only. For instance, retrieve back my example 2:

2)I got so much money which allows me to purchase any hardware I like.

Basically, the speaker wants to convey that he possess a very optimistic amount of money now. So if he really applies "got", that doesn't really make sense, does it? Got, past tense, past fact, not anymore. Literally, he has owned a pretty much money before but no anymore in nowadays. Am I right?

For example 3:

3)You got no brain, seriously.

The speaker actually want to imply somebody he is talking to in that moment is foolish. But using "got", will show something like you were brainless before but this fact ended in the past also, and now you have brain.

So in nowadays, I use "have got" instead:

4) I have got so much money that allows me to buy a real estate.

5) I have got a cake, do you want to taste?

In the final analysis, personally, it is a misuse to apply "got" as "have", but "have got" as "have" is far more making sense though not so profitable since needed to type one more word, amusing.

Please comment my analysis and correct my knowledge if I have taken it wrong.

Yes you have got it! Smile" src="" mce_src="/emoticons/emotion-1.gif">

I think there is a difference between British and US useage though, so you might want to think about that. 'have got' is perfectly acceptable in British English but I believe it is frowned upon in US English, where you should use just 'have'.
