conservation area - listed building

Hi!

Are the expressions "conservation area" and "listed building" used in American English?
If not, what's the AmE equivalent?
Would they be understood by a specialized audience?

Can't speak for a specialized audience, but I would take "listed building" to mean one which is protected by the law, to preserve it as a national treasure, or some such. Something like being on the endangered species list for historical buildings.

If you're thinking the same audience should know both terms, we must be talking about anthropology rather than nature. "Historical site" is the only thing that comes to mind. (Sorry, not much help.)

My paper addresses city and regional planners, but it should be written in AmE and I'm used to BrE (and even in BrE I make a lot of mistakes!). Sad

Any ideas as for conservation areas? Historical sites are only a subset of conservation areas, because the latter can be protected for historical, cultural or natural reasons.

In BrE it's "conservation area" (see this for instance: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Conservation_area).

I was wondering if I can use it or if there's an American equivalent ... if the answer is "no" for both, I will substitute it for a longer paraphrase. Wink
