Hi,

How should I structure the content of what someone said? Someone has said something long and it is your job t report it, but punctuation seems to be not so restrictive. What is a guideline? Why can one use a semicolon or a period here??

.
You can use any of these here-- a period, a semicolon, a colon or an m-dash.  M-dashes are less formal, so may seem more appropriate in quoted speech.
