Hi!

I'm translating a text on tourism at the moment. I found in this, let's say, scientific paper, questions that I have to translate, beginning with: Isn't it true?... or Wasn't it true? Is it possible to leave contractions in such a formal text or should I rephrase these sentences? I'm asking this because as students we were told that we shouldn't use contractions in the formal written text.

Thank you

Remember that you are translating what was written by somebody else. If that somebody used contractions then you would only be doing your job if you used equivalent contractions in whatever other language when translating. Since you were specifically told (by your teacher, boss or whoever) that you shouldn't use contractions in the formal written text, then you have to follow instructions and avoid them.
