Is a coroner the same role as a forensic doctor in crime investigation?
Thanks.

A coroner is a public official, but otherwise I suppose they do pretty much the same thing when a death is unnatural-- look for clues and reasons.

Hi, Elinor:
In Canada, a coroner is also medical professional employed by the local, provincial or federal government. He or she is a medical doctor who deals with death: dead bodies. The coroner's goal is to discover
cause(s) of death. That is all. The coroner's 'clients' are everyone and he/she is not relegated to those involved somehow in a crime.
A forensic doctor is one who collects evidence whether the patient is alive or dead. This is the same with a forensic nurse. The 'client' can be a victim or perpetrator of a crime. These health professionals only concern themselves with gathering evidence when a crime is alleged to have been committed. They are not otherwise concerned with care and treatment. (I recently presented a paper on forensic nursing at the Forensic Psychiatric Conference in Vancouver, BC, Canada, April 14th, 2005. If you are interested, you may contact me here if you would like to see the abstract of that paper.) While a coroner may work in a hospital, it is unlikely that the forensic doctor does. He/she will work in a crime lab in police headquarters or somewhere similar. A forensic nurse on the other hand, will generally work in a hospital emergency room.
I hope this helps. My answer is quite contextual and has little to do with ESL, but you might find the background information interesting and useful in class.

Hi, Melodie:
Thanks for the explanation. Much appreciated.
Sure, I am interested and would like to see the abstract of that paper. But I don't know how to contact you?

Plastic surgory doctor testified in a criminal opened court how the injuries to the victim occur and claimed that the injury was done due to multiple (25) blows by closed fists, on the same area of the victim's face. Based on the doctor's testimony indicated that he did not have any school and/or training to acquire the necessay experience to give forensic testimony in opened court. Furthermore, he was testifying outside his scope of his profession?

In Mexico a coroner or forensic doctor is the same, he/she tries to find out the causes of death, works for the Goverment only.
