Hi teachers,

I am wondering which one of the two things in brackets below is correct.
I know without them, the sentences are better and have no problem but just for grammar practices for beginners, I need to know them.
So... would you check them once and let me know your ideas?
Thank you.

They considered Shangri-la in the Kunlun Mountains a perfect hidden community. This place was described in the novel, Lost Horizon(which was / which had been) written by James Hilton in 1933.

Perhaps one reason (why / that) people search for this lost place is that they believe  it is a paradise where they can have everything  they want.

Hi Pb03

Perhaps one reason why people search for this lost place is that they believe it is a paradise where they can have everything they want.

For the second one, I think 'that' would be alright too. However, 'why' sounds much better to my ears.
