I came upon the following sentence from today's NY times about Obama's impending choice for his vice preisdent candidate.

The staff members of the vice-presidential team reported to duty in Chicago two weeks ago, not knowing who they would ultimately be working for.

I wonder about if the underlined "reported to duty" should be made to read llike "reported for duty in Chicago".

Any suggestions or guides are much appreciated.

There is nothing grammatically incorrect about reported to duty, but you are correct in thinking that reported for duty is by far the more common choice.
