I have many friends that would say "It costed me this much" where as I would say "It cost me this much". But since I hear so many people say it, I am starting to wonder if costed is right too? If no, is there a "rule" that I can explain to them?

I have many friends that would say "It costed me this much"
I used to make that mistake when I was three years old.
costed
is not correct as the past of
cost
. It's
cost
.
