Not much if it's in the living room, Maj. A sofa sometimes unfolds to make a bed, as does a davenport.

A couch is comfy. A sofa is sophisticated.
When you spill beer on the couch (wine never gets near a couch), you just clean it up.
When you spill wine on the sofa (beer never gets near a sofa), you have made a terrible "faux pas" and will be demoted to the B list for at least three months.
"couch" is down about a half in register from "sofa".
Furniture stores wanting to sell you one of these are going to advertise their "sofas", not their "couches".
Just one opinion.
