Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to you to apply for a scholarship from the Erasmus Mundus Program for the International Master of Science Vintage degree course.
My name is Mutita Sangdee. I have graduated with Bachelor’s degree in Biotechnology (1999-2002) from Kasetsart University, Thailand and Master‘s degree in Food Science (2002-2004) from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, Taiwan.
Through study in the Department of Biotechnology, my study focuses mainly on the basic and advanced knowledge of biotechnology. I also took elective subjects in Industrial Fermentation and Waste Utilization. I am particularly interested in research related to Microbiology in Food and Beverages.
In the third year, I had an opportunity to upgrade my education in the field of fermentation processes for a 3 months internship at National Pingtung University of Science and Technology, which filled me with enthusiasm. Driven by this passion, I specialized in alcoholic fermentation for my final year courses as well as for my final year research project, entitled “Rice Wine Fermentation”.
Apart from my studies, I have been a member of the BIOTEC club, a club committed to produce and sale the products from Biotechnology Department such as fruit wines and coconut jelly. My participation in more than two years allowed me to gain the practical skills in general management as well as work on interesting projects and also developed my teamwork and leadership skills.
After completion of my bachelor’s degree, I was offered a scholarship from National Pingtung University of Science and Technology to study in Master of Food Science which taught in English.
My thesis was based on research that using mixed cultures of yeast and mold to produce citric acid from agricultural wastes. During this time, I showed my abilities of fast learning, good adaptability to stress conditions and finding quick and reliable solutions to a large variety of problems. Due to this course I acquired a solid foundation in academic theory and intensive research. I worked really hard to get a good grade. I also proved my capability to study in a foreign language since, I have a good communication skills and a familiarity with the English and Chinese language.
In addition, studying this master course opens a sea of opportunities to young aspiring student like me to meet people from various nations and cultures such as Taiwanese, Malaysian, Indonesian, African, Central American, American and Caribbean which offering me different points of view and contributing to my flexibility, besides the cultural and language gains.
Currently, I am a food technologist who works as a research and development technician in a food industry for one-half year. In my work, I am responsible for developing new recipes to fulfill customer’s needs. To me, this work gives me an opportunity to apply my knowledge in real life. With my dedication, determination and outstanding problem solving skills, I deliver a quality result in my work. As a team player, I have been involved in various projects and have performed well because of my adaptation skills.
Since, my country, Thailand has not yet advanced rapidly in the winemaking , many of Thai wines are underestimated. Traditionally when sourcing superb wines, Thai wines have not featured high on the look for list. It is not made from grapes but other types of fruits and, in the eyes of many purists, is not wine at all but a fruity beverage with alcohol content. Another big constraint on producing good wine in Thailand is the slow emergence of a genuinely wine-focused viticultural tradition. Most traditional grape growers are not yet confident enough to commit to the different viticultural practices required for good wine, and wineries are limited in the extent to which they can do these themselves. Thailand still have no an institution to rate and certify the products as incentives for wineries to make high quality products. Hence, it has been my dream to contribute to their further development. I aim to reinforce my technique in vine growing and oenology and to look further into the yeast strains that could be suitable for the traditional grape variety in my country.
Recently, the production of wines is mushrooming in the countryside with the supporting of the Thai government, which is promoting local industries, In part, this policy aims to serve the government‘s One Tambon, One Product program. This is the first time that individuals have been allowed to produce traditional alcoholic beverages as they were previously banned from doing so under a liquor monopoly law that dated back 200 years.
Thai winemaking is for commercial sale is my hope. As wine is not a traditional Thai product, so after completion of this program I want to do my own business to make a different style of wine blend of Thai varietal, especially created to complement spicy Thai food with the worldwide popularity of Thai cuisine. It was lunched to overseas and exported to many countries. Then I will try to make my brand to appeal in the domestic market.
Having been in winemaking background, I have come to realize that my knowledge is still limited in many areas. In addition to this, education in this field is not given at a graduate level in my country in the way I expected. Thus, I have decided to apply for this program to strengthen my knowledge. I have read through the course descriptions which are offered and I believe that your top level program can benefit me in many areas.
Obtaining this degree from this program will not only strengthen my knowledge, technology and marketing strategy, but will also help me to fulfill my dream to meet many ones professionals, professors, scientists and students of all Europe.
With my strong academic background and relevant working experience, I am confident that I am qualified and able to perform well in this program. I also believe that I can make a significant contribution to this program.
Furthermore, being accepted for this program, I am going intensify of the French language in January 2007 in order to attain a good basis.
Thank you very much for considering my motivation letter. I look forward to your positive response.
Your Sincerely,
Mutita Sangdee
