I wouldn't say that our English pronunciation is strange. It's just not American or British-accented English, although I would say that we do have a tendency towards British English due to its predominance in our schools. If you would like to improve your written English, Singapore is a fine place to start; spoken English, not so much.

But anyway, thanks for that bit about the nations which supposedly have English as a first language - I was wondering if I needed to take the TOEFL for entry to an American college.

The main English-speaking countries are the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia, Ireland, and New Zealand. There are a few other small countries where English is the dominant language; and additionally, it has co-official status in a number of other countries.

wow!  all of these comments have totally opened up new doors in my mind, especially the last one about singapore...

i knew many people all over the world spoke english as a means to communicate amongst travelers, but i had no idea the language was so prominant in so many places!  as if i didnt feel ignorant enough, posting on an english website and not using apostrophes where necessary, or even spelling words right for that materr.

knowledge sure is a dubious thing.
