hello there,

Can anyone explain me what're the problems of the following questions?

1.  According to the survey, allow deductible controibutions would encourage about one million households to invest.

ricky: I guess it must be the word "allow", tell me what the problem and how to rewrite it in another form of sentence.

2.  Cape Cod is curiously shaped; some poeple see it as a flexed arm and the other see it as perhaps a fishhook.
3.  The disks which contained the inofrmation you require was accidentally destroyed.
4.  The appeals court, decided to review the case, has agreed that the company did not violate antitrust laws.

Hello Takchi, and welcome to the forums.

Don't you want to try to fix them first?

The main verb is 'would encourage'. You need a subject for this, whuich means a noun or something like an noun. In this case, the subject is the gerund 'allowing'. A gerund is like a noun.

Consider a simpler example. You can't say 'Cook dinner is fun'. You have to say 'Cooking dinner is fun'.

But one more

1. Dean of the Business Department had students to move the overhead projector to the conference center.

Ricky: Dean of the Business Department had students moved the overhead projector to the conference center.

But the answer is : Dean of the Business Department had students move the overhead projector to the conference center.

Can you explain me the way just the previous question?

Hi,

1. Dean of the Business Department had students to move the overhead projector to the conference center.

Ricky: Dean of the Business Department had students moved the overhead projector to the conference center.

It should be The Dean of the Business Department had students move the overhead projector to the conference center.

Ricky: "Dean of the Business Department" -- subject

"had" --verb

"students ....."--object

Can you explain me the way just the previous question?

The standard expression is 'You have someone do something', meaning 'You caused someone to do something'. eg

Mary had Tom cook dinner. 'Cook' here is the infinitive, so you can't put -ed on the end.

Best wishes, Clive
