Mary fell over the cliff and suffered from broken ribs and a broken leg. In excruciating pain, she [cried out/call out] for help.

What's the difference between the two choices? Also, please correct any mistakes. Thanks in advance

Hi,

Mary fell over the cliff and suffered from broken ribs and a broken leg. In excruciating pain, she [cried out/call out] for help.

What's the difference between the two choices? There's not always a lot of difference, but here are a couple of comments.

cry out suggests more of a mental decision, less control, more emotion, more 'involuntary'.   eg When she hit the ground, she cried out in pain.

call out suggests less of a mental decision, more control, less emotion, more 'voluntary'. eg As she lay on the ground, she decided to call out for help.

Best wishes, Clive
