Hi all,

Try answering this one which I found in one of the other sites.......

You employ someone to work for you for seven days. To pay your employee, you have one bar of gold which is has seven segments. Your employee needs to be paid for their days work at the end of each day.

You may only cut the gold bar twice. How do you pay your employee?

I’ve got an idea…let’s see if I can work it out.

Day one: cut off a segment and pay them. They now have one segment.

Day two: cut off a piece 2 segments big and give them that and ask for the first days gold back – they now have two segments

Day three: Give them the single segment again. They now have three segments

Day four: give them the remaining piece with 4 segments and ask for all the other bits back. They now have 4 segments.

Day five: give them the single segment. They now have 5 segments.

Day 6: Give them the ‘2 segment’ piece and ask for the single segment back. They now have 6 segments.

Day 7: give them the single segment. They now have 7 segments.

I’ve done it!

Sorry for solving your riddle so quickly. I think you need to have a Eureka moment and it came to me immediately. Usually I’m rubbish at puzzles!

It is quite simple. It is a math riddle.  The employer cuts the bar of gold at the one segment mark.  Then he cuts it again at the two segment mark.  Which means he has a piece of one segment, two segments, and four segments.  At the end of the first day the employer give one segment to the employee.  At then end of the second day he gives the two segment piece in exchange for the one segment piece given the day before.  At the end of the third day he gives the one segment piece leaving the employee with the two and one pieced segments and the employer with the four piece segment. At the end of the fourth day he gives the employee the four segment piece. At the end of the fifth he gives the one segment piece. At the end of the sixth he once again gives the employee the two segment piece in exchange for the one segment piece and on the last day he gives the employee the one segment piece. :)

Hi Anon,

You'll see that Nona solved the puzzle back in 2006.
