"What date is it? " is the common question to ask for today's date. How about the following questions, are they common too? The number of hits on Google is not that high.

What date is today?

What is today's date?

In the UK, "What is today's date" is fairly common.  "What date is today" is rare, but, "What date is it today" is quite common.
