"Whay day is today?"
"Saturday." (or any other day)

"What date is today?"
"March the 24th." (or any other date).

As you can see, the two questions are asking for two different answers. I hope this helps.

Hi,

What's the mos frequent way to ask the date?

Are 'What date is today' and 'What date is IT today' both heard?
Yes, although I consider #2 more grammatically correct.

You also very commonly hear 'What's the date today?' and 'What's today's date?'

Best wishes, Clive
