I had a sandwich and an apple for lunch, the apple wasn't nice, but the sandwich was okay.
in this example you can see we use the indefinate article in the first halve of the statement because we are speaking in 'general', in the second halve we are speaking about THE sandwich and THE apple, the 'specific' ones we had for lunch.

' the ' is used when there is a sense of comparison.
eg ' The ' dogs are faithful animal.
eg Dogs are faithful animal.
Both are correct, the first eg is to use dog to compare with other animals. While the second eg just to say in general.
