 In our grammar class, we encountered a sentence which we found unclear:

Gorkon responded, "Unfortunately not. Several individuals nations on Green have developed the bomb and other deadly

weapons.So far they have avoided using the weapons against each other, and now there is a sort of uneasy peace.

Is the bomb referring to a specific bomb, a unique one or bombs in general?

I think the bomb refers to a specific bomb, because the text does not mention those words in other parts of the passage.

You develop something new. So the bomb is very likely something new, a specific item, that is why the bomb. If the bomb means a plural, bombs, then we should understand develop better as collect.

As Past Simple says, "the bomb" refers to the ability to construct and detonate a nuclear bomb.

Please, let's not have more discussion about about what could have been meant. In any discussion about countries building up weapons, "the bomb" means "having nuclear capabilities."
