Hi,
I would like to know if DEGREE here refers to BREED:

'What degree of a dog is that?'

Thanks, Jo.

Hello Jo

I would take it to mean "what kind of dog is that?"

Is that British?
What degree of dog is that? would be very odd in the U.S.

Barbara, who answers in American English. My housekeeping skills attest to the truth of the second law of thermodynamics: Left to themselves, things get more and more random!

I've never heard it over here, GG! Sounds strange to me too. The only reference I can find is to Steinbeck's Travels With Charley:

"A dog, particularly an exotic like Charley, is a bond between strangers. Many conversations en route began with 'What degree of a dog is that?'"

I'd vaguely assumed it was dustbowlspeak...

I wonder if degree is a corruption of "pedigree?"

Good thought MH. Could very well be. But I've never heard it outside this forum, so it's either highly regionalized or simply no longer spoken.
