does a further education course LEAD to a degree?

This is possible. A further education course can lead to many things: a degree, new friends, a large overdraft, an appreciation of real ale, etc.. But a further education course doesn't ALWAYS lead to a degree, of course. "Lead" implies a certain inevitability.
