Hi Phebe,

Welcome to the Forum.

You can say either of these -

Despite the rain, I went to the park.

In spite of  the rain, I went to the park.

Best wishes, Clive

Hi,

Yes, or something like a noun, eg a gerund or a pronoun.

You can say "Despite the fact that he was wearing a helmet, was still badly injured."

Or better

"Although he was wearing a helmet, he was still badly injured."

Note: The first suggested sentence should be "Despite the fact that he was wearing a helmet, he was still badly injured."
