How are the implicit meaning of these two sentences different?

1. He showed a greater understanding of things told.

2. He showed the greater understanding of things told.

-The first sentence implies that he has shown improvement within himself, like if he understands something better now than he did before.

-The second sentence implies that he is one out of two or more people, and understands it best.
