Have done means having done something in the past as far as I know.

I have been to Disneyland. <-- it means I went to Disneyland some time in the past.

I had been to Disneyland. <---- how about this?

Thanks for answering.

Hi,

Welcome to the Forum.

Have done means having done something in the past as far as I know.

I have been to Disneyland. <-- it means I went to Disneyland some time in the past.

I had been to Disneyland. <---- how about this? Simply put, it means you went to Disneyland before some particular time in the past. There are a lot more details, but that's the very basic idea.

Best wishes, Clive

I had been to Disneyland before I was 12. <--- like this? But is this any different than:

I have been to Disneyland before I was 12. <--- is this wrong?

Thanks.

Hi,

I had been to Disneyland before I was 12. <--- like this?  Yes But is this any different than:

I have been to Disneyland before I was 12. <--- is this wrong? Yes. The tense tells me 'before now' but the other words tell me 'before the time in the past that I was 12'. So, you are telling me two different things.

Best wishes, Clive
